QC Governance and Assurance (Security)
Benchmark is able to provide security support as part of an integrated service package through established relationship with security industry specialists. Geophysical operations are often undertaken in remote locations, former battlegrounds or areas not secured by established oil field operations. Formal risk assessment and appropriate qualified and experienced security personnel are sometimes required.
The main focus for Oil and Gas Industry operations these days has thankfully settled on all the stakeholders, not just a few. The foundation for that attitude was laid by the United Nations on the 10th of December 1948 when the UN General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."
There are thirty Articles in the declaration, but the first encapsulates the spirit of the act:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
That foundation was eventually built on by the International community but significantly by the Oil and Gas industry:
Established in 2000, the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights are a set of principles designed to guide companies in maintaining the safety and security of their operations within an operating framework that encourages respect for human rights.
The Voluntary Principles are the only human rights guidelines designed specifically for extractive sector companies. Participants in the Voluntary Principles Initiative — including governments, companies, and NGOs — agree to proactively implement or assist in the implementation of the Voluntary Principles.
The IOGP and IAGC have introduced guidance documents in line with the VPs on how to establish and manage practical security about, and related to, geophysical operations.
